Preserve® FAQ

Preserve Logo
What does the Preserve
® (ACQ) warranty cover?

The warranty covers termite infestation or fungal decay only. The ACQ preservative does not work on insects that do not ingest the wood (e.g., borer beetles, carpenter ants, carpenter bees, etc.). Termites recognize the wood as inedible and move on. Wood has a natural tendency to warp, twist, split, etc. We cannot guarantee that this will not happen, therefore, it is not covered in our warranty.

Does Preserve® treated wood last as long a traditional CCA treated wood?

Yes. Preserve® treated wood has the same long lasting performance in providing protection against decay and termite attack that people have come to expect from traditional CCA treated products.

What is Preserve Plus?
A Preserves Plus is arsenic- and chromium-free pressure-treated wood with a built-in water repellent. The environmentally advanced water repellent plus ACQ~ preservative treatment in Preserve Plus is pressure treated deep to the heart of the wood, to provide long-lasting protection against rot, decay, termites and the effects of weathering.

Return

Will Preserve Plus Absorb Water?
A Yes, but the absorption rate is much slower and more uniform when compared to ordinary pressure-treated wood. The splitting and checking which occurs in wood exposed to the weather is caused mainly by alternating cycles of swelling and shrinking corresponding to periods of wet and dry weather. Preserve Plus slows the rate of water absorption minimizing the degree of swelling and shrinking in wood, resulting in a more stable product that performs and looks better.

Return

Does Preserve Plus Still Work When It Is Sawn or Machined?
A Unlike surface coatings, the water repellent and preservative treatment in Preserve Plus is a built-in pressure treatment, which continues to provide protection even if lumber is exposed below the surface through sawing, drilling or planing.

Return

Will Sunlight Affect Preserve Plus?
A The sun's UV light will initially change the color of Preserve Plus to a natural brown tone, eventually turning the wood's surface gray following long-term exposure. The prolonged effects of weathering can cause small surface checks, and reduced beading of surface water over time. However, beneath the surface, Preserve Plus still retains its water repellent and dimensional stability characteristics that provide improved weathering performance over the long term. Water repellent stains and sealers can be applied periodically to Preserve Plus to enhance and maintain the surface appearance of the product.

Return

Where Can Preserve Plus Be Used?
A The ACO plus water repellent treatment in Preserve Plus contains no EPA-listed hazardous chemicals and can be used in areas where safety and concern for the environment are a priority. Preserve Plus is particularly suited for applications such as decking, playgrounds, walkways, benches, outdoor tables and chairs, siding, fencing, gazebos and landscaping, where the long-term appearance of the project is important to the consumer.

Return

Can Preserve Plus Be Painted or Stained?
A Preserve Plus can be painted or stained to match any outdoor color scheme. High-quality, oil-based paints and stains are recommended. It is important to ensure that the wood is dry and free from surface deposits prior to applying any coating to Preserve Plus.

Return

What Types of Nails and Fasteners Do You Use with Preserve Plus?
A For the best results, hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners are recommended. A list of approved fastener systems is available from your Preserve Plus supplier. Anti-corrosion coatings applied to fasteners and fittings in contact with treated wood will enhance long term performance. Direct contact of Preserve Plus treated wood with aluminum fasteners and fittings is not recommended.

Return

Is Preserve Plus' Performance Guaranteed?
A Preserve Plus is the only arsenic- and chromium-free water repellent wood backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty! Ask your Austin Wholesale Decking Supply representative for details.
